June — What’s in Season this Month?
June is this wonderful bridge month when it comes to growing produce in Kentucky, you start out the month where early spring veggies and fruits that are easily affected by the heat are still going strong and end the month with the beginnings of fan favorite heat seeking plants starting to show off the fruits of their labor.
So what can you expect to find this month at the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market from your local produce farmers? Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, peas, carrots, onions, garlic, cucumbers, eggplant, whispers strawberries, (back to regular voice) peaches, blueberries, blackberries and fresh herbs.
Wait, why are we cautiously whispering about strawberries in June?
Strawberries have to be, without question, the number one request most vendors at our market receive throughout the year—wondering which booth will be the golden ticket of those bright red sweetness bombs. Unfortunately, for all of us, strawberry season is a very short window here in Kentucky.
Wait, hold up, before you list your house on Zillow and commence on the Great Pilgrimage of Long Strawberry Seasons, they’re short everywhere. Even Florida only gets about a four month window, and they have hurricanes, larger bugs and much bigger snakes. I don’t know about you, but I’ll take my chances here in the Bluegrass State with the two month season for that tradeoff. But do what you must.
So while, strawberries start to become scarce in booths at the market the first couple of weeks of June, we are fortunate to have several vendors extending the season for you with jars of homemade strawberry jam waiting for you to slather across a slice of freshly baked, locally crafted bread. Sourdough, fresh milled, regular white bread? We have vendors offering all variations of gluten goodness… and also gluten-free goodness.
