October — What’s in Season?
My opening line to this post was going to be… I want it to be… October is here, ‘fall is in full swing.’ However, as I type this it is currently a cool 90 degrees. The maple tree outside my window is doing the absolute most, showing off gorgeous ruby red leaves and Ryan Hall, Y’all says our first frost may descend upon our area this Saturday.
So, I mean, go off queen. Fall, that is.
You may be wondering, if everyone’s HOA’s seem to be down with 20 foot skeleton’s assembled in front yards, and we’re yo-yo-ing between leave the house dressed for winter and arrive home stripped down for summer—what’s still growing out on Kentucky farm ground?
Don’t fret, boo. I got you. Actually, University of Kentucky Extension does, I’m just uploading and adding my out of control commentary.
You could absolutely, and honestly, you should carve a pumpkin, but do you want to know what’s also carvable? Watermelon. And yes, we somehow won the location lottery of living in an area that can grow nourishing fall vegetables perfect for soup season, while still holding on to summer’s bounty of fruits and tomatoes.
I know, I know, a tomato is technically also classified as a fruit, but never once have I wanted to blend one up in a smoothie with honey, so the tomato stands alone, as far as this post is concerned.
These “what’s in season” blogs heavily focus on the produce side of what is available locally at the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market, but please keep in mind our market has the capacity to cover all whole foods options of your weekly grocery needs: dairy, meats, eggs, honey, jams, hot sauce, canned and baked goods. We even go as far as to have locally produced smoker pellets. Because, why not.
As of the day of publishing, we have FOUR market days left of 2026. Two regular and the last two end with an extra spice of life, the Halloween Market, on, you guessed it… October 31st, and then, with the strike of midnight, vendors like Redeemed Heritage Farm and others will dust off their elf costumes to bake and prep days in advance to end the season with our much anticipated Holiday market.
More on those soon.
Till then, we’ll see you Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 1205 Triplett St, Owensboro, KY 42303.
